    We would like to start a Learning Community around Project and Dissertation Supervision practice.

    We are looking for colleagues who are interested in sharing good practice around project and dissertation supervision, as well as exploring ethical ways to manage students’ expectations; creating good staff-student relations; having a dialogue about how we can work ‘smarter’ to manage our workloads; and improving the quality, rather than quantity, of feedback.

    We will apply for funding to organise a pan-University supervision event in 2017-18.

    The broad aims for the Learning Community on Supervision practice are to:
    • Create a dynamic supervision community across the University;
    • Establish a network of support for project and dissertation supervisors;
    • Assist project and dissertation supervisors to establish a rapid rapport with their students given time constraints;
    • Exchange good practice on supervision;
    • Improve supervisors’ feedback practice;
    • Manage students’ expectations of supervision;
    • Develop a Supervision guidance handbook and resources including a Supervision contract to manage staff and student expectations;
    • Develop a series of case studies/FAQs on critical incidents in supervision;
    • Create staff development opportunities for dissertation/project module leaders to manage their supervisors;
    • Enable mentoring for new supervisors and those finding aspects of supervision difficult;
    • Use Peer Review and Observation for supervision sessions;
    • Recognise excellent supervision as part of Student and Staff Awards.

    I’d be interested in this. I think it’s a good idea.
